Reto Siegenthaler began his career as a plastics technologist. In January 2023, he joined Silac AG as the successor to Sepp Kälin, who retired. In this interview, he explains how he first learned about Silac and what he particularly values about his job.
Mr. Siegenthaler, what is your role at Silac?
As a technical sales representative. My role involves providing technical advice and ensuring our customers’ satisfaction.
What have been the key steps in your career so far?
My career began with an apprenticeship as a plastics technologist. Afterward, I earned my stripes at various manufacturing facilities while simultaneously completing my continuing education to become a TS-certified plastics technician. For 13 years, I worked in technical sales for hot runner systems before returning to a manufacturing facility. It didn’t take long, however, before I realized that I missed direct contact with customers.
What fascinates you about your job, and why did you choose Silac AG?
I love the variety in my job. On the one hand, I’m an “office worker,” and on the other, I’m “on the road.” Thanks to this variety in my work and the interesting conversations with clients, I never get bored on the job.
Silac is a modern and innovative family-owned business that is open to new approaches. After my first conversation with Mr. Birchler, I knew we were a good fit. The challenge was just right for me.
How were your first few days on the job?
It’s always interesting to join a new company. During the first week, I was very tired every evening because there was so much new information to take in. However, I was fortunate that Sepp Kälin, the former sales manager, was still with the company for two months, overlapping with my start, and was thus able to give me an excellent introduction to my new role.

What do you like best about your new job?
The variety of tasks and the associated diversity. From calculating costs for new components and preparing specific quotes to weekly meetings with clients and plastics trade shows, where Silac AG cultivates client relationships at its own booth.
What do you think of Silac as an employer?
From day one, I could sense—in a positive way—that Silac AG is an owner-managed family business. Decision-making processes are very streamlined, and you can really feel the flexibility within the company. Everyone is eager to be on the same page and moving in the same direction. This is truly unique!
