Anyone who labels packaging as “sustainable” today will have to be able to prove it in the future. The EU is getting serious: Under the Empowering Consumers Directive (EmpCo), environmental claims without independent certification will be prohibited starting in 2026. Terms such as “environmentally friendly,” “climate-neutral,” or “recycled” may then only be used if they are substantiated by a recognized, independently audited certification system. Companies that cannot provide such proof risk receiving warnings and suffering reputational damage. Silac is prepared—and has successfully renewed its ISCC PLUS certification.

The plastics industry is under pressure. The industry is searching for alternatives to petroleum-based raw materials—and regulatory pressure from the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is further exacerbating the situation. For many manufacturers, the use of recycled materials is thus shifting from a future trend to a concrete requirement. Silac has been testing such alternatives for quite some time.

Digital assistance systems hold great promise: more stable processes, less waste, and greater safety in production. What matters most, however, is how well they perform in real-world applications.

At Silac, we don’t test new technologies in theory—we test them in real-world operations. That’s exactly where we find out whether a solution works.

At Silac, apprenticeship training isn’t just a mandatory program—it’s a springboard for young talent. Our apprentices take on responsibility early on, work with state-of-the-art technology, and actively help shape the company. Mike Marty shows just how far this can lead: As the top polymechanic apprentice in the entire canton of Schwyz, he is a prime example of what’s possible when support and dedication come together.
